Summer Safety Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know
As summer temperatures rise, it's important to consider the well-being of your furry friends. We all know how much we love our pets, and just like us, they can be vulnerable to the heat. As your home inspector, I wanted to take a moment to share some helpful tips on keeping your pets safe and comfortable during the warmer months.
1. Hydration Is Key
Make sure your pets always have access to fresh, clean water. The heat can quickly dehydrate them, especially if they are spending time outside. Consider investing in a water bowl that stays cool or one that’s easily accessible for your pet at all times.
2. Watch For Heat Exhaustion
Just like us, pets can suffer from heat exhaustion, which can lead to more serious health issues. Signs to look out for include heavy panting, drooling, weakness, or uncoordinated movements. If you notice these symptoms, bring them to a cooler area immediately and provide water.
3. Limit Outdoor Activity
Try to limit outdoor playtime to early morning or late evening when the temperature is cooler. Avoid walking your pet on hot pavement, which can burn their paws, and keep an eye on the humidity levels—it’s just as important as the temperature when it comes to comfort.
4. Protect Your Pet’s Paws
Hot pavement, sand, and even asphalt can burn your pet's paws. If you need to walk your dog during the hottest part of the day, try walking on grass or dirt, or use dog booties for extra protection.
5. Create A Cool Environment
Ensure your pets have a comfortable, cool place to relax indoors. Fans, air conditioning, or even a cool tile floor can help regulate their temperature. Never leave pets in a car, even with the windows cracked, as it can quickly become dangerously hot.

6. Groom Regularly
Pets with long fur can become overheated more easily. Regular grooming can help remove excess hair and keep your pets cooler. Make sure to use pet-friendly grooming tools, and if you're unsure about cutting their fur, ask your vet for advice.
7. Check The Flea And Tick Situation
Summer is prime time for fleas and ticks. Make sure your pets are up to date on their flea and tick preventatives. Check their fur after being outdoors, especially if you've been in wooded or grassy areas, and don’t hesitate to ask your veterinarian about the best options for protection.
8. Watch Out For Hot Cars
Even on mild days, cars can heat up quickly. Leaving pets in a car is never safe, and in the summer, the heat can rise to dangerous levels in just minutes. It’s best to leave your pets at home if you’re running errands.
By following these simple steps, we can help keep our pets safe and comfortable throughout the summer. If you ever have questions about your home’s environment and how it might affect your pets, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to help.
